his familiarity with the work over so long a time must surely have brought him new insights year by year. wilfred owen concert (bob chilcott) november 4th at theatre severn, to commemorate the end of ww1.(please see calendar and rehearsals page s ) the project organisers have reduced the numbers required from each of the various local choirs invited to sing, and we are now seeking to finalise the numbers from the shrewsbury school community choir where we have been requested to provide 50 voices. john moore wants the haydn festival chorus to form the basis for the choir he needs, but in order to make up the 50 voices there are vacancies available for some of those members of the community choir who originally expressed an interest in taking part. anyone wishing to apply should bear in mind that there will only be time for us to have four rehearsals at school, on june 11th and 18th and september 3rd and 10th. everyone will be expected to be available on all four dates. you will also need to attend additional rehearsals in st chad's (1st and 6th october) as well as over the weekend of the concert. scores have just become available (£5 each) but there are no training aids yet because it is a brand new piece commissioned for the occasion. the limited time for rehearsals gives little opportunity available for 'note bashing', so intending participants will be expected to learn the piece away from rehearsals over the summer break. because the first two weeks of the autumn term will be taken up with rehearsals for the bob chilcott piece, rehearsals for the community choir's normal st cecilia performance will start on monday september 17th. the st cecilia concert will be later this year because the school's autumn term is also longer and finishes later than normal. the main choir's normal st cecilia programme will therefore be rehearsed over the same number of weeks as in previous years. if you want to be considered for the chilcott choir, please reply to [email protected] . the number of vacancies available is dependent upon whether you sing sat or b, to allow john to create the voice balance he needs. as usual the highest number of vacancies is for tenors. applications will be treated on a 'first come, first served' basis so please reply as soon as you can. later summer concert because of the extra mozart rehearsals, it has not been possible to fit in an additional concert this summer apart from the annual english haydn festival performance at bridgnorth in june. anyone who still wishes to be considered for this event, and has not yet put their name down, needs to do this before monday 16th april. subscriptions if you have any queries regarding subscriptions, please contact jackie by email at [email protected] ....looking ahead to messiah: please note in your diaries that our annual abbey performance of handel's messiah will take place on saturday 22nd december this year to avoid a clash with services on sunday 23rd. and even further ahead: we will give another performance of the bach st john passion at shrewsbury abbey, just before easter on 13th april 2019, in 2017...... autumn 2017 handel messiah : christmas concert, the abbey, 23rd december many thanks to all who helped to make this a great success, and raise money for our charities: the league of friends of the royal shrewsbury hospital mri scanner appeal; dancing for parkinsons shrewsbury, and the friends of the samaritans. presentations of cheques to these charities were made on 19th february. we performed bach's magnificat as part of the st cecilia concerts on 11th and 12th november 2017, in support of the school’s nominated charities shewsy house in everton, and medic malawi . review by mr fraser-andrews: ..... despite the piece’s considerable complexities, the massed forces of the shrewsbury school community choir and orchestra carried it off with indefatigable aplomb and the highest ideals of musicianship... on 11 september 2017 presentations were made to the severn hospice, from our charity performance of bach's st john passion at easter community choir singers supported a service for the eve of st thomas, including byrd's mass for 4 voices , on 2 july 2017 at oxon church, shrewsbury we performed bach's st john p as sion on april 22 2017 in shrewsbury abbey, in aid of severn hospice and, as the english haydn festival chorus, michael haydn's c minor requiem in bridgnorth on 11 june "a very successful choice" (see anton y hodgson's review in classical source ) summer garden party! - please see news page the 2017 agm was held on 25 september. papers are here welcome to the shrewsbury school community choir web site we are a friendly, non-auditioning choir aiming to perform a wide range of classical and contemporary choral works to a high standard: we are able to use unrivalled reheasal and performance facilities; we are led by the charismatic and highly experienced john moore, director of music at shrewsbury school; we are supported by the shrewsbury school music department and orchestra; we also perform with the shrewsbury symphony orchestra;
